As a whole class we discussed what we already know about how a boat floats:

Wordle: What makes a boat float

To stimulate higher order thinking we watched this Youtube clip about how we might make a boat that floats.

We worked together in our groups to research using the resource page to find out more about how to make a boat that floats.

Explore

Students are provided with hands on experiences. The teacher provided each of our groups with a range of materials and a container of water.
Materials: wood, plastic, aluminum foil, bottle caps, paper, cardboard and clay.
In our groups we explored the material to see what sinks and what floats.

We drew all the objects that float as a way to gather evidence for when it comes to make our boats.

We are now ready to make our boats.
We worked in our groups to make a boat that floats out of one of these materials. We were able to add in other material as long as though we could justify why in the explain phase.

Watch these videos to hear ou explanations on Glogster.com as a diary entry:

Elaborate

Students extend on their understanding to make connections.
We have individually designed our own boat on Skible.com these will then be critiqued by the year 6 students.

Evaluate

Together as a whole class we put together a prezi presentation with all the photos of what we have done through out this unit. The purpose of this activity is for us to reflect and present our new understandings to their parents and other classes.
